The Name

As listeners to BBC Radio 4 may recognise, the name ‘Shakespeare And The Bible’ originates from the long-running radio show ‘Desert Island Discs’, in which celebrity guests are invited to select their
favourite eight pieces of music plus one book, in addition to the bible and the complete works of Shakespeare. In Owen’s words, ”It’s quite simple: we had our first gig booked but we hadn’t got a clue
what to call ourselves. I happened to be listening to Radio 4 one Sunday morning and I just thought: that’ll do…and, 25 years later, I still think it’ll do…”

As the renowned musicologist Prof. Brian Quinn has pointed out: ”They’re the only band to have featured on every edition of ‘Desert Island Discs’ for the last 50 years.”
